Stopped by the newly opened Cielo Bakery on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I was inspired to go to the place after seeing the Northwest Boulevard Businesses group ad in the Inlander. I think that it is smart for neighborhoods to work together for mutual benefit. Garland, Perry, Hillyard, and NW BLVD all will benefit from group marketing.I was struck by the amount of top-o-line equipment in the little space.
Creative, tasteful decor makes the most of the small space, but for me the real attraction was through the window in the the back kitchen. If I had to guess by the looks of the bakery, they plan on producing wholesale product, because they have the set-up to to do lots more than they can sell out of the small storefront. Of course, wholesale is nothing new to this family with baking in their veins. It was apparent that NW Spokane was ready for a place for coffee talk, the place was packed even though they were past their 3:00 pm closing time. I hope that they expand their hours and days soon. Sunday and Mondays are difficult days to find a local place for coffee and pastries.
The business is a mother/daughter partnership. Sue Teague is the Daughter of Darrel Jones, the fabled Donut man behind The Donut Parade. The Donut Parade is often over-looked as a Spokane Icon Business. Dick's keeps getting the press but alas it is from Seattle. Donut Parade is a true Spokane Landmark. Outsiders will recoil at the Parade's extremely rough-around-the-edges atmosphere, but true Spokanites will defend the integrity of it forever.
As I understand it, Erica Teague is Sue's Daughter. She is a graduate of the CIA, (shades of Rockwood Bakery). I am not sure what her CIA instructors would think of her selling muffins tops ala Seinfeld, but the pastries I tried were all good. Doma Coffee and bike parking make this a good future destination for me.

I haven't been there yet. But according to a few friends who have, the pastries reeeally good. Can't wait to check it out.
Hey there, Mr. Blaine. Thank you for the lovely review! I think the CIA would be proud of the muffin-tops. It's not as high and mighty an organization as one might think. Just real people who love to eat (and create!). And, the daughter's name is Erica (that's me), not Kathy. Please introduce yourself next time. Thanks again!
Erica- My family rated your pastries highly. We love your place and will be seeing you again soon. I would love a tour of the back kitchen.
